Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 418

THE WALKING DEAD #44 VARIANT COVER. 2022.
Gouache & acrylic on illustration board (w/ digital edits), 11 × 17″.

Here's the second of 6 connecting covers for The Walking Dead Deluxe (details here). These were all penciled together in a giant Photoshop file and printed out individually onto Strathmore illustration board (with my Epson P400). I tried my best to make them connect in real life, but it required about an hour of Photoshop editing to make it work. I also made a rookie-level mistake that would come to haunt me toward the end of the project. I'll detail that once we get to #47.

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 417

This already came out in July, but it was the first of 6 connecting covers. You can get all the details at Image Comics. Once the last issue is out (#48), I'll have some signed sets to sell in my shop.

Panthro!

PANTHRO. 2022. Ink & watercolor on illustration board, 4 × 6″.

I won't be at San Diego Comic-Con this year, but my art rep, Splash Page Comic Art, will be at Booth 4400 (just like old times). This recent Panthro piece (YouTube live stream) will be up for auction to benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Even if you won't be attending, you can still bid on the original artwork here. Thanks!

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 416

Here's yet another peek at the reference behind the Justice League: Classic poster. There was just so much that went into it, I've been breaking it down figure by figure. Since, the Atom didn't have an analogue in the modern version, I had to acquire some new reference. The Light probes and action figure were more of a general reference for the entire scene, which is why he's missing some of the highlights in the final rendering. I figured that Wonder Woman (behind him) would've blocked most of the rim lighting.

Comic Art Live

I'll be part of Comic Art Live later today! Tune in at 10 a.m. PST for an hour-long chat (and some live painting if I can swing it). Splash Page Comic Art and I will have some new original art for sale, including 4 (maybe 5) new 4x6" head shots and an 11x14" Wonder Woman, inked by my dad, Joe Rivera. Hope you can join us on YouTube!

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 415

Here's a detail of Green Lantern from my digitally painted Justice League: Classic print. The pose isn't too different from the modern version, but I did have to switch ring hands (not to mention Hal's face for John's). My pose above was mainly for the hands. I used Kyle T. Webster's Ruffin brush (with my own mods) for the glow, as I still wanted it to look like traditional paints.

Superior Spider-Man Prints

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN TEAM-UP #11 & 12. 2013.
Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board, 11 × 17″.

I've got a couple new prints up in my shop, and they make a halfway decent set. These were produced by Bottleneck Gallery in Brooklyn (my old neighborhood) and they turned out great. I even cleaned up a few boogers that I missed when they were first published. Each Artist Proof is 16x24", will be signed and numbered (edition of 14), and ships in a heavy-duty tube. They're $45 each, or $80 for the set. Hope you enjoy!

Oh, and the originals are still available from my art dealer. You can also see the reference behind the art here and here.

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 414

Here's a detail from my digitally painted Justice League: Classic print featuring Black Canary. I almost gave her the classic blue jacket, but I couldn't quite make it look right in context. She almost had gloves as well. I spent more time on her than any other character (about 20 hours in all).

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 413

This detail from my Justice League: Classic print features a flexing Plastic Man. He was probably the fastest to paint: no feet, not much clothing, and if the drawing was incorrect, I could just say he was stretching :)

I had sculpted a Vision head in ZBrush for an earlier project, but I've ended up using it for just about everything. At the time, I was using Marmoset 3D for rendering (which is fantastic) but I'd like to get better at Blender, which allows both real-time renders and sculpting.
