Black Panther #4 Cover

BLACK PANTHER VOL. 7 #4. 2018.
Gouache and acrylic on bristol board, 11 × 17″.

I'm happy to announce I'll be doing a run of Black Panther painted covers, with some help from Daniel Acuña, who provided the initial sketches and composition. I've loved his work since the first time I saw it, so it's great to finally collaborate with him. If you want to see more of his work, just pick up the series — he's doing all the art!

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 383

THE VALIANT #3 PAGE 6. 2014. Ink(ed by Joe Rivera)
on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

This is what I would probably label as a "boring" page. Not a whole lot is happening, but it's necessary to set up the environment and develop the characters' relationship. It still requires a good bit of research, much of which can be used on subsequent pages. I chose an actual mall in Colorado as the basis for "Lyram Mall," but took many liberties. I usually do character studies to keep their looks consistent, and in this case, had to keep track of Bloodshot's wounds, which slowly healed over the course of the scene.

Alien 3 Cover

ALIEN 3 Cover. 2018.
Gouache (by Joe Rivera) on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

Perhaps you heard that William Gibson wrote a screenplay for Alien 3? Perhaps you wish you could've seen the as-yet-unproduced film? Well, Dark Horse is helping to bring that vision to life courtesy of Johnnie Christmas and Tamra Bonvillain. My Dad and I created a cover for the series that's based on the work of Diego Rivera (which will make more sense once you read the story, I promise).

We worked in a brand new way for this cover: I provided the digital pencils, my Dad rendered it in black and white gouache, and I colorized it in Photoshop. The end result was a lot of fun, and something different that what we usually produce. Hope you enjoy!

PLANET OF THE APES: URSUS #6. 2018.
Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

I've been a little behind on posting, so this is me trying to get back in the swing of things. This book has already hit stores, full details here! The last of the 6-issue mini-series, I highly recommend picking it up (and not just 'cause we did the covers).

I used all kinds of reference from screenshots to internet pics of toy figures. I had already sculpted an ape head for the previous covers (using the 3D program Sculptris), and it proved useful once again to get a novel point of view.

Hope you enjoyed this series of covers. We're big fans of the movies, so these were a joy to work on.
