Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 372

THE VALIANT #2 P. 22. 2014. Photoshop, 2750 × 4175 px.

Quite a bit went into this page, reference-wise, but the only pic I took of myself wasn't all that much help. Mostly, there was just a lot of "stuff" needed to make it look like a legitimate ops center. Most reference gathering is like this — you just need to know what something looks like so it doesn't look too fake.

Nice shorts!

Down below, you'll notice that I ended up having to replace one of the characters on the big screen. Not sure what the deal was, but Shadowman had to be removed. That doesn't happen too often, but I leave it to editors to keep continuity in check.

I just copied and pasted a panel from a previous page (same deal for the small screens). I don't always care for the way that looks, as there are issues of scale, but the deadline helped me make that decision. The screen was drawn as a separate file (a Photoshop Smart Object) and skewed into perspective.

Super Metroid. 2017. Ink & watercolor on paper, 9 × 12″.

Although vaguely familiar with the character, I never played Super Metroid as a kid. I found as much sweet, sweet 90s illustration as I could, and tried to channel the style, while making it my own.

It was inked with a Pentel Pocket Brush and painted with Holbein watercolors on Fabriano Watercolor Block (with touches of Holbein white gouache). Total time, including research, was 4 hours.

Anyone know the artist?

M. Graham vs. Holbein Gouache

SPIDER-MAN. 2017. Ink & watercolor on paper, 9 × 12″.

I was recently asked if I had a preference between 2 brands of gouache, both of which I use regularly.

I use Holbein gouache for most paintings (used to paint with Acryla Gouache, an acrylic that dries matte, but now only for impasto passes with white). M. Graham is good for keeping on a watercolor palette because it doesn't dry out and crack as much. They use honey as part of the binder, which might make the difference (though I honestly have no idea). I should also say that I prefer the finish of Holbein gouache, which is a true matte. M. Graham leaves a slightly shiny surface, so I use it mostly in underpainting.

This Spidey pin-up has nothing to do with the info above, just realized I hadn't added it to my gallery yet. It was inked with a Pentel Pocket Brush and painted with Holbein watercolors. Have a great weekend!

Venom #1 Variant Cover

VENOM #1 (Variant Cover). 2018. Ink(ed by Joe Rivera)
on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

In case you missed the news, this will be a variant cover for the Venom series debuting in May from Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman. I'll show the full process and reference when it hits shelves.

I've also got a feature at the Silver Brush blog. I've been using their brushes for almost my entire career — I highly recommend them. Here's a good starter set of watercolor brushes, if you're in the market.

In addition, I've got an interview about the issue up at Geek.com. Have a great weekend!
