SILVER SURFER AND TOOMIE. 2017.
Gouache on illustration board, 9 × 12″.

Using an anatomical figure I had already sculpted in Sculptris, I created a texture to mimic the reflective surface I needed. By painting a sphere (or using a photo of one) Sculptris can map the reflections to the 3D model to create a passable rendering. This eliminates the need for computing all the light trajectories in a scene. The painting itself was done in gouache on Strathmore Mixed Media Board.

Long live The King!

I think this was a photo I altered and plugged into Sculptris

    1. Thanks! I did an underpainting first, usually dark washes first. I save the light, opaque passes for the end. Basically, pick your darkest dark and paint those first. Then move on to the next value until all that's left is the pure white of the paper.

    4. Usually something dark, like Sepia or Payne's Gray. I've used Ivory Black before, but not often.

    1. The reflective surface is all about reference. You just need to know what color and where to put it. If you want some good practice, try painting a chrome object from life.
