New Email List and Sacramento Commissions

THE MAD HATTER. 2017.
Gouache on watercolor block, 9 × 12″.

Hear ye, hear ye! I've got a brand new email list. Please sign up for news on appearances, commissions, original art, prints, and books. I'll still be posting here and across social media, but it will ensure you don't miss out on anything.

Which reminds me...

I'll be selling commission spots through my online store for the next show, Wizard World Sacramento.

You must be at the show to pick up the art (but you are free to arrange a pick up with someone else). Only 1 commission per customer, please.

There are 3 portrait options (no full-figures):
  1. 9 × 12″ Fully-painted:               $350
  2. 9 × 12″ Ink with watercolor:     $160 ($200 on sketch cover)
  3. 9 × 12″ Ink with gray tone:       $100 ($120 on sketch cover)
$50 surcharge for actor likeness or movie version.

California sales tax is included. Surcharges will be added once we discuss details and subject matter. No other items will be available until after the sale.

I will accept 1 painted commission, 5 ink & color, and 2 ink wash.

The links will go live Tuesday, May 30 at 12pm PST

(open to US customers only)

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 341

WONDER WOMAN 75TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL. 2017.
Acryla Gouache on sketch cover, 7 × 10.5″.

I don't typically like painting on sketch covers, but I'm always happy to do so for the Hero Initiative. They'll be auctioning this piece for charity on May 27 at the Phoenix Comic Con. You can see this (and the rest of the covers) at the Hero Initiative site. And if that weren't exciting enough, here's me posing with my very own Lasso of Truth!

I don't think you're ready for this jelly

Dark Knight, Comics Culture, & Appearances

THE DARK KNIGHT (detail of raw scan). 2017.
Gouache on watercolor block, 9 × 12″.

Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by my table at Comic Con Revolution! It was a great show and I hope to be back in the future. Here is one of the 7 pre-commissions I completed (I wasn't able to get to a few of them, as it was just a 1-day show).

While I have your attention, here is a recent interview I had with Terence Dollard of Comics Culture. During our discussion, I gave a work-in-progress peek at the Cap/Iron Man commission that I was working on. Hope you enjoy!

Lastly, I've been getting a ton of questions about commissions and appearances, so I think I'm going to create an email newsletter to help keep people up to date. I'll be sure to post when that launches. In the meantime, my tentative (and totally unconfirmed) schedule for the rest of the year is as follows:

Wizard World Sacramento
June 16-18

StocktonCon
September 1-3

New York Comic Con
October 5-8

Have a great weekend!

Gouache, and Acryla Gouache on bristol board, 11 × 17″.

I'll be at Comic Con Revolution this Saturday in Ontario, CA. All my commission spots have been taken, but I'll be happy to sign your books. I'll also have copies of my Modern Masters book to sell. It's just a one-day show, so I'll be at my table as much as possible. Hope to see you there!

Happy Friday, folks! We've got a new Mondo poster that will be released today. The 24 x 36" screen print comes in 2 color schemes and is a limited edition. Check their blog for more info on the online release. I will have artist proofs to sell, but probably not for a while. If you're interested in the original art, please contact Mark Hay at Splash Page Comic Art.

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 340

THE SELF-ABSORBING MAN. 2009.
Acryla Gouache on bristol board, 10 × 4″.

Readers of this blog will probably find this piece familiar. Don't think I ever posted the reference for it, but I could be wrong. After all, it's been almost 10 years since I started this thing.

DAREDEVIL. 2017. Ink & watercolor on paper, 9 × 12″.

Here's the first of 10 pre-commissions for Comic Con Revolution on May 13. I'll be at table I-1, but probably won't have time to sketch at the show. Always happy to sign books, though!

VISION. 2017. Gouache on paper, 9 × 12″.

This was in the batch of commissions I recently finished from NYCC last year. (I'm perpetually behind.) I used several kinds of reference to get just what I was looking for.

On the left is a picture of me at my desk (pardon the man-bun). Second is the classic panel by John Buscema from Avengers #58. Next up is a lighting rig courtesy of Handy, an art reference app. And finally, my own anatomy sculpture in Sculptris.

Indiana Jones

INDIANA JONES. 2017. Gouache on paper, 9 × 12″.

This is the final commission from NYCC 2016. Feels good to be done, but... I think the next NYCC will be here before we know it.

I've got some new things in my online shop (some of them old). Might add a couple more signed comics at random times this week, so stay tuned.

(And for those of you waiting on my TMNT prints, I probably won't get to selling those until after Comic Con Revolution on May 13... got a bunch to finish before then.)

Mandrake the Magician (and my Dad in Daytona)

MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN. 2017.
Gouache & watercolor on paper, 9 × 12″.

My dad, Joe Rivera, will be at the Daytona Beach Comic Convention this Sunday, April 23. He'll have some artwork on display, prints to sell (some signed by me) and will be happy to sign your books. (Lately, he's been making more comics than I have!) Have a great weekend!

HELLBOY AND THE B.P.R.D.: 1953 #3 P. 14. 2016.
Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board, 11 × 17″.

All I really needed from this reference was the left hand, which did the trick for both panels on this page. And you may notice I forgot to draw Hellboy's tail, so I just added it digitally. And for those of you who are getting a sizeable tax refund, the original art is still available.

Oh, look, there's my wife!

Captain America: Mary Jane?

CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE ROGERS #18 (MARY JANE VARIANT).
2017.Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

Marvel emailed me asking for Mary Jane as Captain America. How could I say no? The cover is an homage to Captain America #2 which, much like #1, features a certain dictator.

Also, just a reminder, our Daredevil commission will be up for sale today at 1pm PST. Have a great weekend!
