  1. Hey Paolo,

This painting is awesome! I have two questions if you don't mind. What is your process when painting with watercolor and acrylic? Do you use acrylic over the watercolor? Also I noticed some of your work is ink and watercolor. Do you ink and then use watercolor or visa versa? Every time I paint over my inks the ink spreads. Even though it says waterproof on the bottle. Thanks for your time! All your work is great and inspiriting. I show it to all my students as well.

    1. Thanks, John! Typically, it's all watercolor, with only a dash of white acrylic at the end for highlights. As for ink, I do that first, washing watercolor overtop. I use Holbein Special black or Pelikan Drawing Ink A, both of which are waterproof.

    2. Thanks You! I just had one more question if you don't mind. When using watercolor is it necessary to do an underpainting in umber?

    3. For me, it depends on how complicated the piece is. Since this is pretty standard for the kind of portraits I do, I just go straight to color. But for multi-figure compositions, or whenever I don't know exactly what the final product will look like, I do a full-scale underpainting.
