The Twelve #12 Cover. 2011. Gouache and acrylic on bristol board, 13 × 19″.

I'm skipping Wacky Reference today because I've got a demo video to share with you, courtesy of Mike Furth and The Comic Archive. We documented the creation of this cover from start to finish, including multiple interviews and an unabridged time-lapse recording of the painting process. Running time is 30 minutes, split into 3 parts, and we cover quite a bit of material. Here's the link. Hope you enjoy it.

  3. Very cool cover and painting...are you using the holbein designer gouache or the the acryla gouache? Also what type of printer are you using to print out you rough? That looks really fun and a time saver, or is it? Just wondering.

I love your paintings and like someone else said, it is good to see you painting again.

  5. Thanks, everybody!

mjartist: I use both, but it's mainly gouache. I use the Acryla when I'm confident in my color choice, or I need to make a mark that can stand up to continued abuse. Most of the time, white is the only Acryla on my palette.

The printer is an Epson R1900. I'm pretty sure it saves time in the long run, but more time is required in the digital stage. It's also a great motivator, since the painting gets such a head start.

Jan: The scanner is an Epson GT-20000
