Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 39

Page 16 from Mythos: Captain America dramatizes the frozen, violent moments following the mid-air explosion that sent Steve Rogers into suspended animation. To accomplish this I used several reference sources ranging from myself to a 1:6 scale action figure. I try to avoid drawing from mannequins for anatomy and gesture, but I find them indispensable for clothing reference. However, I rarely copy the contours verbatim; the model serves as more of an inspiration for the types of folds and furrows one would find at full scale.

It's much easier to pose the figure (my college roommate named him Captain Catastrophe) rather than trying to photograph myself in the correct costume. These figures are now widely available online, complete with highly detailed clothing of just about every period and style. And that's not to mention all of the accessories. I'll dedicate a future Wacky Reference Wednesday to my tiny arsenal of 1:6 scale weapons.

You may have seen this maquette previously. Here, I've partially submerged him to get an accurate water-line.

And here's me hamming it up. Google didn't pay me to wear that — my former roommate used to work for them. Of course, they do host this blog.

  2. Perhaps you don't remember this, but the Hubs and his roommate Matt used to have an entire collection of these 1:6 scale action figures on a venerated mantle in their dorm room. This guy sure brings back a lot of memories.

  3. By the way, I'm bestowing upon you a couple of blog awards, Paolo: http://christinaerodriguez.blogspot.com/2009/01/blog-awards.html

Stop by to pick them up (download from my Flickr) and pass 'em on if you like!

  4. Are these GI Joe figures or some other brand...I know that there are a lot of companies putting out 12 inch figs with all the accessories etc. but some are more poseable than others. I picked up a 12"
female villain toy from 21st century toys several years back that even has articulated shoulder blades....super poseable.

  5. Gotta love 1:6 scale weapons. Nothing beats buying a random pack of them from KB, or better yet, sculpting a few when you can't find what ya need (I've done that for a few swords...wonders you can do with scrap bits of metal and needle.)

  6. Christina,

I remember the collection well. I was even a bit envious. These days, however, I'm trying to scale down the collection I have.

    And thanks for the awards!

Michael, I can't remember what brand he is, but he might be a 21st century figure. The best weapons I've found are from Soldier Story. I'll be posting on that soon.

Drew, the only time I've sculpted weapons was for my Red Sonja sculpture back in 2004. It was fun to do, but if I can buy one, I'll usually go that route.
